Experience as a Legal Assistant

Hi Everyone! I am Emily Blaschko. I graduated from South Central in May as a Legal Assistant. I work at the Le Sueur County Sheriff's Office. I also worked there while I was in school and then took a full-time position with them once I graduated. I have now been there for approximately four years. The real world is a little nerve racking but very exciting at the same time. A little work experience can go a long way. I am here if anyone has questions, concerns or just a thought. I might not be on all the time but I will try to check back as much as possible. Good luck and ask Lynda lots of questions.

Since you work for a small town office do you have to take care of a lot of things around there??

I work for the county which is located in the small town of Le Center. Although, out county is growing we are still a smaller county. We all have our own "major" duties that we do on a daily basis. There are three office assistance here...one takes care of all the records, my supervisor does most of the civil process and I transcribe statements/reports and handle the other half of civil process. On slower weeks (like this week) we help each other out. So all in all we end up doing a little bit of everything.

That's good though that you don't only end up taking care of the duties you have to do. But then also help others and get a chance to work on different things. Are there times that you feel the day takes soo long to be over? Or does the time go by fast working as a legal assistant??

Hey Emily,
What legal tasks do you do at the sheriff's office?

Hey Kaylie! The main legal task that I do at the sheriff's office is working with civil process. If you haven't taken civil procedures yet you might not understand what civil process is. Civil process would be the service of papers on someone. For example, order for protection would be served on an individual to stay away from another individual. Those papers come into the sheriff's office and we process them through with the proper paperwork and send off with one of our paper servers to have them serve the individual. I have been to a lot of training and have taken civil procedures and still feel like I have a lot to learn. It's a lot of information to obtain but I really enjoy it!

Ofelia...as a legal assistant my days vary. Some days go by so fast and others drag on just like many other jobs I'm sure. For me it all depends on what I am doing. If I really enjoy the task I am working on it flies by. If I am transcribing a statement and I am on page 20 and still typing the day just couldn't go any faster. It all depends in my opinion!

Did you find it to be difficult working as a legal assistant before you graduated? Or did you find it to help you understand it more?

I really enjoyed working as a legal assistant before I graduated. I found it to helpful with some subjects I came across in class. There would be some things I would be learning in a class that I already had some good insight on. I would recommend looking for a job in some type of legal office if you aren't already:) Plus when you do graduate it makes you feel more comfortable starting your new Big Girl/Boy Job!

Since you work in a smaller town and such. compared to getting the same job in the city is there a huge pay difference..do you know?
